Introduction to a girl who wants to make a difference 🙋

Hi everyone! My name is Jessica Justus, and I'm a senior 😊🎓

I am a Chemical Biosciences major with a minor in Psychology, and I hope to become a physician. My favorite part of college is living in an apartment with my roommates. They're the best, and we have a bunch of fun together, mainly playing Pictionary. Here's a picture of us just being weird, LOL. We love candles.

Photo I took of the four of us in September 2016

The past three years, I was given the amazing opportunity to be a teacher at Good Tidings Vacation Bible School (VBS). As a child, every year I went and had fun, and now, being a teacher is one of the best experiences I've had. I usually teach pre-k or kindergarten (they're the cutest). This year I taught the kindergarten class, and one of my students accepted Jesus as his Savior. This honestly made me so happy, and I still smile when I think about it. VBS lasts one week, and on Friday, each class has to prepare a small program. Here's a picture of my kids performing their song. They did an amazing job; I'm super proud of them ;) Look at their cute sunglasses. Oh, and that's me, on the floor in front of them.

Photo a friend took from VBS 2017

Finally, my family is very important to me. I'm pretty close to my parents, and I have two younger siblings. Here's a picture of my parents and I riding some sort of cart by the beach in Galveston.
Personal photo taken last December, picturing my dad, mom, and me :)

Beyond them, I'm lucky to still have all my grandparents with me, and a bunch of uncles, aunts, and cousins to have fun with. Most of my cousins live in Dallas, and we went and visited quite a few times this summer.

To close, I'm a girl who wants to make a difference in the world, even just in a small way. I hope that as a physician, I can go to other countries and help people. I don't know what the future holds, but I'm looking forward to it! Here's one of my favorite songs :)

  2. How great that you are a teacher at Bible School, Jessica! The way that Bible stories (and other religious stories) are retold especially for children is something I am so interested in; maybe you will want to do a project like that for this class or experiment with children's styles of storytelling in your blog posts. Telling a story (or writing a song, etc. etc.) with a young audience in mind is not always easy, but then it is so great to be able to share that with some children and really connect with them. That picture of your kids is so adorable!

I'm sure you are thinking about your friends and family in Texas... the water in the background of your Galveston picture looks so warm and inviting, but that is not how the waters are looking right now in Texas. I hope we will get better news and some relief in sight soon!

  3. Hello Jessica! I loved reading your introduction post and hearing how passionate you are about the things you're involved with. Having good roommates really makes all the difference in college, and I'm glad you found wonderful ones. Also, I've been involved with VBS a few times myself (both in attending and leading) and it's such a neat way to minister to kids! It's incredible that you got to help one of them accept Jesus. Good luck with your studies this year and your path to becoming a doctor!

  4. Hi Jessica!
Apartment living is just the bomb isn't it?? I love being able to come home and talk and play games with my roommates!
Though I personally don't have any experience with VBS, I know several people that have done it and it sounds incredible! Regardless, working with kids is so rewarding and I would love to incorporate that into my life somehow. It makes me so happy when I see other people wanting to do the same!
My family is from Rockwall which is near Dallas so that's pretty cool! Come visit more often! Texas is the best!
I wish you the best of luck on your quest to make a difference in the world! Something tells me you'll succeed!

  5. Hey Jessica!
Wow I'm very impressed with your chosen major! I am sure you will be very successful. I have never lived in an apartment and I am jealous that you get to life in one. I also enjoy spending time with my family! Although I am the youngest of four so I am sure that we have had very different experiences with that. I am very impressed with your goals in life and I hope that you will be able to make a difference in the world! Best of luck to you!

  6. Hey Jessica! I am a Biology major so I bet we have had some of the same classes together. I personally don't know how you can do all of the chemistry because that was the hardest classes for me. I love how you guys play board games as well, because my roommates and I always play Catchphrase. If you haven't ever played that game you guys should try it because it brings upon a bunch of laughs.

  7. Hey Jessica,

It is good to see a STEM major who is not so caught up with their major. There is a huge misconception us STEM majors are shut-ins who hate interacting with the outside world, yet here you are working with children. I truly admire this!
As for roommates, I too enjoy hanging out with my roommates. Roommates are huge gambles in college, so it is really good that we both were able to find roommates that are not people that we hate.

Good luck with the rest of the semester!

  8. Hey Jessica! It's truly great to see how much of a difference that you want to make on the world, and it already looks like you're doing that in your own way. Way to go! One of my younger sisters (I have two) is also a STEM major and she loves it; I'm sure you do as well! The picture of you and your parents is awesome! I've only been to Dallas for OU/Texas games, and a Nick Jonas concert. I live with my best friends; it's honestly one of the best experiences that I've had in my college career. My first year at OU was a disaster when it came to the roommate situation, so I've gotten lucky that my roommates and I live so well together.

Good luck this semester! Can't wait to see more stuff from you!

  9. Jessica, I too work with children at a daycare for the summer and they truly are amazing to work with. They are so happy and can always put a smile on your face, there is nothing better than working with children. I am not sure if you have decided what type of physician you want to be, but I am sure you would be great working with kids. I also lived with roommates in college for a couple of years and it is great to make these close friendships. I had also never heard the song Walk on Water. It has a very upbeat tune, I like it. Good luck in your classes this semester and going on to medical school.

  10. Hey Jessica!

I think that your commitment to helping others is really awesome! I can tell that you really care about making a difference in the world. I am a Biology major, and I recently applied to dental school. I always like to see people who are pursuing a goal similar to mine. I really like the fact that you are so close to your family! I have so many cherished memories with my family as well. I wish you the best of luck in the future!

  11. Hi Jessica! I like the layout of your blog and the emoji that you chose in your title. It is unlike any others that I have seen so far. I was a mentor for a vacation bible school back in my hometown. It was the best feeling to have kids adore me so much. Kids are the best to be around when they are behaving and listening to their elders. Thank you for sharing!

  12. Hi Jessica! I am loving the background image of your blog! It makes me wish I was sitting on a beach watching the sunset! From your intro, I can tell you really care about investing in other's lives. That is an incredible attribute to have. Keep up the good deeds gal!

  13. Hi, Jessica!
I loved your introduction. You seem to have such a kind heart for others, seen through your involvement in VBS and your desire to help other people through being a physician. It's funny, I actually started out as a Chemical Biosciences major before switching to my current degree. I am also wanting to be a physician! Are you currently applying to medical school? And have you given a lot of though to any area in which you would want to specialize? Good luck with the whole process!

  14. Hey, Jessica! I'm glad you had such a great experience doing VBS! I work in my churches kids ministry and I can confirm that it is great fun. It sounds like you already and continue to make a difference in those kid's lives, so good going! I know a lot of people make such a fuss about kids wanting to get saved when they're little, but Jesus said "let them come to me", so be glad in that. From what I've gleaned from your bio, you seem very passionate for people and I hope that love can lead you to do great things! Good luck to you!

As a side note, I too, love candles.

  15. Hi Jessica,
Its nice to meet you and get to know you through your introduction post! That is really cool that you want to be a physician. Do you plan on becoming a physician here in Oklahoma or somewhere else? Being a senior has to be exciting, you are almost done with all of the school and homework. I think it is great that you are close with your family! Family is so important and being able to be close with them is something that some do not get to experience! I hope the rest of your semester goes well and I'll be looking for your posts.

  18. Hello Jessica! Your goals toward becoming a physician are very admirable. Reading through your introduction, it greatly reflects your goals of helping people and making a difference. The picture of your VBS kids is adorable! VBS was always fun for me growing up. Walk on Water is one of my favorite songs too!

  19. Hi Jessica! I loved reading your introduction and all about you wanting to be a physician. I hope that you have a great future in doing that and that you have a fulfilling career! Where are you thinking for med school? Also, my roommates are my favorite thing about college as well. I moved in with a few girls that I didn't know right before my sophomore year and one of them has now become my absolute best friend and it is such as blessing.

  20. Hi Jessica! So nice to read your introduction — I love that you enjoyed teaching at Vacation Bible School so much. I have good memories at VBS from when I was growing up. It sounds like you've got an exciting (but stressful) time ahead with med school applications and your future as a physician! Way to go, that's an awesome goal.

  21. Hey Jessica! Thanks for sharing your introduction! I think that your title is inspiring and with a major like yours you are bound to truly make a difference one day. I was also a vacation bible school leader for a few years and I love it. Kids are so funny and its crazy how much you can learn from them every day. You also have a lovely family! Good luck with senior year and your career!

  22. Hi Jessica!
That's so cool that you have the same exact major as me too! I also am striving to make it into medical school and hope to achieve that when I graduate. I wonder how much work it is to manage a bunch of kids at that age, but it sure does look like a lot of fun! Family is indeed super important, but when you go to college you kind of lose sight of family. It's nice that you haven't lost that connection!
